News release

Commissioner David Byrne joins Europe's publishers at seminar:
Improving Communication of EU Media and Media-related Issues

16 September, Hotel Renaissance, Brussels
no registration fee for journalists

EU Commissioner David Byrne will be one of the speakers participating in an informative and practical seminar being held by the European Publishers Council (EPC) in Brussels on 16 September to de-mystify the complexities of media regulation and legislation at EU level and to facilitate the reporting of issues of importance to journalists and media organisations. Other speakers include Amelia Torres, porte parole for Commissioner Monti and Brandon Mitchener, Brussels correspondent of the WSJ Europe.

The morning sessions will focus on practical information targeted at journalists based outside Brussels who nonetheless are expected to cover some EU media-related stories. Commissioner David Byrne will speak over lunch and the afternoon sessions will be of interest to Brussels correspondents as they will focus on detailed comment and analysis of current and ongoing EU legislative and regulatory issues affecting the publishing industry. Speakers will include Commission officials Claudia Hahn from DG JAI on the Rome II proposals and Jennifer Long from DG Sanco on the Unfair Commercial Practices directive. EPC Chairman Francisco Pinto Balsemão, EPC Member Jaakko Rauramo, Chairman and CEO of Sanoma WSOY Corporation and Angela Mills Wade, EPC Executive Director. They will focus on European initiatives affecting both advertising and editorial issues.

Whilst the afternoon session may be of more interest, Brussels correspondents are welcome to attend all or part of the seminar but are requested to register as soon as possible, making it clear which sessions (including lunch) they wish to attend.

EPC Chairman and CEO of Impresa in Portugal Mr Francesco Pinto Balsemão said: “We are consulted on a day-to-day basis by the institutions on a raft of issues with direct relevance to the media industry. We will be focussing on current legislative issues which require the attention of media reporters across the EU. This seminar will provide journalists with the knowledge and tools for accurate and topical reporting, as well as in-depth briefings on the most pertinent issues. This is an ideal networking opportunity. Anyone reporting on EU media issues should attend.”

Please return the registration form as soon as possible to Heidi Lambert Communications in Brussels on Tel: +32 2 732 5546 / hlc@skynet.be / Fax: +32 2 735 3603
